Mapusa, Goa – A religious conversion plot orchestrated by Believers activists in Canca, Mapusa, was brought to light by the news portal ‘Mapusa Reporter’ on 6 September. Following this exposure, the Believers activists fled from Canca.
The Goa Government, in a bid to curb unlawful religious conversions carried out through force, allurement, fraud, or marriage, had proposed the ‘Goa Prevention of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Bill, 2026’. However, instead of tabling it during the Monsoon Session of the Legislative Assembly on 31 August, it was withdrawn under opposition pressure.
Against this background, the incident in Canca, Mapusa, underlines the pressing need for such legislation. Regarding the development in Canca, Mapusa, journalist Girish Mandrekar stated, “On the morning of 6 September, members of the Believers group were visiting houses and distributing leaflets. Whilst handing out the leaflets, they were urging residents, ‘Join our fold’. As I was passing through the area, I grew suspicious. Upon probing further, the reality of the situation became clear to me. I discovered that various groups of Believers were operating in the locality. After carrying out a recce of residences, this group specifically targets homes where people live alone. Following the incident, I pursued the proselytisers, confronted them, and questioned them about their activities. After I reprimanded them and warned that I was reporting the matter to the police, the Believers activists fled the scene on two-wheelers. These activists spoke Konkani and were locals from Goa. It appears they were converted through the Believers fold.”
Just last week, ‘Voice of Goa’, another local news portal, similarly shone a light on activities underway at a Believers ‘Nepali Church’ in Merces. These incidents have once again exposed the escalating religious conversion activities of the Believers in Goa.
