HJS condemns denial of access to Hindus in Ashram Harimandir

The Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) condemns the denial of access to Hindu temple in the India ashram (hermitage) to area villagers who regularly came there to pray, to give way to Julia Roberts’ shooting of film ‘Eat, Pray, Love’ at Ashram Harimandir in Pataudi near New Delhi India. The huge film set in the town of Pataudi near Delhi has also prevented Hindus from celebrating the ongoing Navaratri religious festival.

Allowing Hindus to worship in their temple is more important than the film shooting, as the film can be shot at a convenient time so as not to affect the devotees. It is of utmost importance for Hindus to practice their Dharma and visiting the temple especially during the Navaratri festival is an important part of their practice. Roberts’ shooting of the film in the temple premises is posing a major hurdle.

Police say they are under strict orders to stop devotees from entering the temple while filming is under way because of security considerations. Hindus need to ponder over the point that would they allow such things during Ramzan, Eid or Christmas, and is this fair to Hindus in a secular country like India? Is this not an encroachment on the constitutional freedom to practice one’s religion?
