MTDC GM assures HJS to publish matter on their website in Marathi

Mumbai: Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) has given details of main tourists’ places in the State and method for reservation etc. on its official website, only in English and Japanese languages. Mr. Shivaji Vatkar, the coordinator of Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) for Mumbai, Thane and Raigad districts contacted Mr. Vijay Chavan, the General Manager of MTDC in this connection to  register protest and to make a demand for giving the information in Marathi. (HJS works for maintaining the identity of Marathi! – Editor SP) Mr. Chavan assured him that information would shortly be put up on the website in Marathi.

Mr. Chavan, while explaining the reason for not keeping the information in Marathi on the Corporation’s website, said that firstly as per the availability of facilities, information was loaded in other languages to attract visitors. Mr. Vatkar said that in other countries and even in the States other than Maharashtra, the matter is published first in the local language; but it has been the policy of the Maharashtra Government to not pay any respect to Marathi language and treat it as inferior to other languages. He asked Mr. Chavan as to when the information was likely to be loaded on the website in Marathi.

Mr. Chavan assured that it would be done within few days. He also said that explanation on the issue was published in a Marathi daily newspaper ‘Maharashtra Times’ issue dated 7th August. Mr. Chavan, however, could not give satisfactory explanation for the double standard of the Government. Mr. Vatkar then contacted the technical department of the website; he was told that it would require 2-3 weeks to make the information available in Marathi.
