Kakkanad : People with different political ideologies and religions held their hands together on Saturday for the protest organised by the DYFI district committee at Vazhakkala here, against the ‘beef ban’ imposed by the Maharashtra Government.

As many as 500 people participated in the protest, which was inaugurated by CPM district secretary P Rajeev MP.

As part of the protest, the organisers served Kerala delicacies ‘Kappa and Appam’ along with beef dishes, which were ‘finished’ in no time. Many of the women and children who participated in the protest were seen sharing the food to express their solidarity with the stir.

It was a week ago that president Pranab Mukherjee ratified the Maharashtra Animal Preservation (Amendment) Bill banning the slaughter of calves and bullocks, following which the DYFI had launched a massive protest. Speaking after inaugurating the protest, P Rajeev MP said, “the Maharashtra Government’s move underscores its fascist attitude. It is up to the people to decide what to eat and what not. Governments have no right to interfere in it. They sometimes forget the fact that India is an Independent country.”

DYFI district president P Vasudevan presided over the function.

Former MP Sebastian Paul,  Swami Viswabadrananda Sakthi Bhodhi, Father Paul Chelakkat and Aslam Maulavi also took part in the event.
