20,000+ attend Temple consecration ceremony in Singapore!

Singapore: The Sri Sivan Temple in Geylang East held a consecration ceremony on Sunday with more than 20,000 people witnessing the event. President S R Nathan was the guest of honour, which was also attended by Deputy Prime Minister S Jayakumar, MPs and other Singaporeans.

At 11am, holy water was poured over the pinnacles and deities within – the main aspect of the whole event. The Hindu Endowment Board with the help of over 800 volunteers took more than six months to prepare for the event.

The temple was redeveloped at a cost of S$5.5 million and now offers greater accessibility for the elderly and disabled, and improved facilities. The consecration is a religious ceremony conducted to bless a Hindu temple.

The Sri Sivan Temple was established in the mid-19th century at Orchard Road and then re-located to Serangoon Road. It finally moved to Geylang in 1993 with its unique architecture, different from that of traditional South Indian temples. 48 days of ceremonies preceded the consecration which will now be followed by another 48 days of events.
