Nizamabad, Telangana — A major controversy has broken out at a private school in Armoor, Nizamabad district, over Hindu students allegedly being taught Urdu and the Islamic ‘kalma’. Police have booked the school’s correspondent, principal, and the Urdu teacher on charges of inciting religious tension between different communities. On the other hand, around 20 people, including a local BJP leader, have also been booked for allegedly entering the school premises and assaulting staff members.

The incident took place on 27 June at Bharat Chandra Vidyalaya. Some BJP workers and a few parents came to the school and alleged that Hindu students were being taught the Islamic ‘Kalma’ during the Urdu class, which triggered a huge commotion on the campus.

Principal tries to justify move; cites lack of separate classroom

The school principal, Aamer Khan, attempted to justify the matter by claiming that some Muslim parents had requested Urdu classes for their children, following which an Urdu teacher was appointed for the new academic session. Since construction work was going on at the school, extra classrooms weren’t available, so the Urdu classes were conducted in the same room used by students of other faiths as well, which is how some Hindu students ended up copying Urdu letters into their notebooks. He denied that namaz was taught, insisting only the basic Urdu alphabets were being taught, with no religious rituals involved.

The principal alleged that when the complaint was being lodged, local BJP leader Vandula Balu arrived with his supporters and assaulted him. He also alleged that the police made him sit on the floor of his own office for a long time.
