An Exhibition of obscene paintings of Shri Mahakali and Deity Shiva at ‘Maskara’ Art Gallery in Mumbai

An FIR registered against Hindu-hater painter, T Venkanna and art gallery owner Abhay Maskara after a complaint lodged by advocate Vishal Nakhawa

Mumbai, 27th September – During the Navaratri festival, ‘Maskara’ art gallery in Colaba has held an exhibition of obscene paintings of Shri Mahakali Devi and Deity Shiva. Under the guise of art, nude, indecent and sensual paintings of the Goddess and Deity Shiva are drawn showing them in erotic poses. Advocate Vishal Nakhawa has filed an FIR against painter T Venkanna and ‘Maskara’ art gallery’s curator Abhay Maskara. Devout Hindu activists are demanding arrest of both these persons.

As stated in the FIR, advocate Vishal Nakhawa, on receiving the information about exhibition of obscene paintings of Hindu Deities, went to the art gallery to verify and questioned Abhay Maskara about the exhibition. Maskara stated while justifying the painter that it was his artistic concept. Activists of other devout Hindu organisations also reached the art gallery on learning about the matter and at the Police Station. A case has been filed in this context in the late evening in the presence of devout Hindu activists including Mr Madan Reddy, Mr Bharat Patel and Mrs Mitali Patel.

Most offensive paintings under the guise of art

In a painting displayed in this exhibition, Shri Mahakalidevi has been shown as nude with a sword, a lotus, flame and a head in Her hands. The fierce form of Mahakali is shown in this manner but she is also shown with ornaments and a garland of hands around Her waist. In this painting, however, Devi has been painted in a sensual manner showing her breasts and vulva. There is no sign of any respect expected for a painting of Deity. Her hair is also shown as uncombed. Deity Shiva has been shown as lying at the feet of Shri Mahakali Devi also in nude, and Deity Shiva’s ‘linga’ has been painted in the direction of Shri Mahakali Devi’s vulva; thus, trying to exhibit eroticism. In other paintings too, paintings of Shri Durgadevi and Deity Shiva are shown in nude and in obscene manner in this exhibition.
