Palghar (Maharashtra) – Christian missionaries have allegedly built hundreds of prayer centres illegally on forest and revenue department land in Palghar District and are said to be carrying out large-scale religious conversions of poor tribal Hindus. Despite these activities happening openly, no action is being taken against the illegal prayer centres by the administration. It is being alleged that such activities continue only with the cooperation of administrative officials. The Sanskriti Rakshan Samiti has warned that if immediate action is not taken against the illegal Christian prayer centres in Palghar District, they will launch a strong agitation.

On 10th September, under the leadership of Swami Bharatanand Saraswati, State General Secretary of Akhil Bharatiya Sant Samiti (Maharashtra), hundreds of activists of the Sanskriti Rakshan Samiti met Palghar District Collector Dr Indurani Jakhar and submitted a memorandum demanding action. Activists from Bajrang Dal, Vishwa Hindu Parishad, and other organisations were also present. On this occasion, the Sanskriti Rakshan Samiti submitted to the Collector a list of 129 illegal Christian prayer centres located in the talukas of Jawhar, Vikramgad, Mokhada, Dahanu, Talasari, Palghar, and Wada.

Statement given by the Culture Preservation Committee –

‘…Otherwise anti-national forces will spread anarchy’ : Swami Bharatanand Saraswati, State General Secretary, Akhil Bharatiya Sant Samiti

‘Christian missionaries have illegally set up prayer centres on Government land. We have submitted a list of 129 such illegal centres, but in reality, there may be 300 to 400 illegal prayer centres. At these Christian centres, poor tribal Hindus are lured and driven away from Sanatan Hindu Dharma. They are forced not to attend village councils and to stop worshipping Hindu Deities. Missionaries also claim that diseases are cured by applying consecrated oil. Even though Maharashtra has an Anti-Superstition Law, no action is taken in such cases. The Maharashtra Andhashraddha Nirmoolan Samiti that calls Hindu festivals superstitious does not utter a word about these superstitious missionary practices. By luring tribals, Matangs, and Banjaras, the missionaries convert them from Hinduism to Christianity. Thus, a large-scale conversion of Hindus has already taken place in Palghar. To prevent this, it is necessary for the State to urgently pass an anti-conversion law. This is not just about conversion—it is also fueling anti-national activities through urban Naxal, communist, and atheist organisations. If action is not taken in time, there is a possibility that anti-national forces may use this situation to create anarchy in India, similar to what has happened in countries like Bangladesh and Nepal’, Swami Bharatananda Saraswati told a Sanatan Prabhat correspondent.

Editorial Perspectives

  • For many years now, Hindus have been converted by Christians at various levels; yet, never once has it been reported that missionaries carrying out forced conversions have been given strict punishment ! Hence, conversions are not being stopped.
  • Devout Hindus are forced to take actions which the Government machinery should have been taking !
