Hindu leaders call off four-day hunger strike, but relay protest to continue until concrete action is taken on the illegally constructed mosque.

Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) – The Sanjauli mosque dispute has taken a new turn as leaders of Hindu organisations, who had been on an indefinite fast for the past four days, have now ended their hunger strike following assurances from the administration. The protest was being held by the Devbhoomi Sangharsh Samiti near the Sanjauli police outpost.
On 21 November, the administration held talks with the protesters and agreed to their demands. After the discussion, Shri. Madan Thakur and Shri. Vijay Sharma ended their indefinite fast.
Despite calling off the indefinite fast, Hindu organisations have confirmed that the relay protest will continue until concrete action follows. Shri. Kamal Gautam, President of the Hindu Raksha Manch, said that the discussion with officials was positive and that the administration have accepted their demands. He stated that their struggle would continue until all their demands were fully met. He added that the indefinite fast had been called off, but the relay protest would continue, and that they were ready to work with the administration to find a solution.
Demands of the Hindu Organisations
- Withdrawal of the FIRs registered against workers of Hindu organisations.
- Disconnection of electricity and water supply to the mosque, stopping unauthorised activities, and sealing the building.
- Immediate implementation of the Court’s order directing the demolition of the illegally constructed mosque.

Major protest today against illegally constructed Sanjauli Mosque
Devbhoomi Sangharsh Samiti to stage a major protest after the administration ignores the court’s demolition order on the illegally constructed mosque.

Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) – The Devbhoomi Sangharsh Samiti has called for a protest on 21 November, demanding that the unauthorised mosque in the Sanjauli area be sealed. The court had declared the construction of this mosque illegal and directed the administration to take action; however, no action has been taken so far. Members of the Samiti have been on a hunger strike near the Sanjauli police outpost since 18 November. They are demanding the withdrawal of the complaints registered against them following last week’s attempt to stop the offering of namaz. The Samiti has also demanded that the electricity and water supply to the mosque be disconnected.
- The Samiti’s co-convenor, Shri. Vijay Sharma, stated that a meeting was held on 19 November to decide the next course of action, and it was resolved to organise a large protest on 21 November to press their demands.
- Shri. Vijay Sharma has appealed to parents not to send their children to school on the day of the protest so that they do not face any inconvenience. The road in Sanjauli will remain closed on 21 November. Office-bearers from various organisations, along with local residents, will be participating in the protest.
- The Samiti claims that since the court has declared the mosque unauthorised, no religious activities should be conducted at this site.
- The Samiti has alleged that although the court ordered the demolition of the illegal structure, no action has been taken; instead, cases are being registered against its members. Shri. Vijay Sharma stated that the protest on 21 November will be even larger than the one held on 11 September last year. Ten people were injured during the scuffle that took place at last year’s protest.
Editorial Perspective
Even after the court issued clear instructions to demolish the unauthorised mosque, no action has been taken, compelling the public to protest for the implementation of the order — a situation that arises only under Congress rule, which consistently fails to act against criminals and fanatics.

Curfew imposed in the area

Mandi (Himachal Pradesh) : On 13th September, the Mandi Municipal Corporation Commissioner H S Rana’s Court ordered the demolition of the illegally constructed portion of the city mosque. The Court granted the mosque management 30 days to carry out the demolition of the unauthorised structure, with a warning that if they failed to comply, the administration itself would proceed with the demolition. The original one-story mosque will not be affected, but the two-story structure built without permission will be demolished. Meanwhile, Muslims have started demolishing an illegal wall of the mosque they had built near Jail Road from 12th September. The wall encroaching on the road is now being removed by the Muslims themselves.
Protest by Hindus for action against illegal mosque
While the case concerning the mosque’s illegal construction was being heard in the Municipal Court, Hindu organisations and residents of Mandi staged a protest outside, demanding the demolition of the mosque. (Why should Hindus have to demand this ? Why doesn’t the administration take down illegal constructions on its own ? – Editor). Tensions rose as the protest continued. The case had been ongoing in the Municipal Court since June 2024. After a failed discussion with the administration on 12th September, Hindu organisations resumed their protest on 13th September. Protesters chanted slogans like ‘Himachal ne thana hai, Devbhoomi ko bachana hai’ (Himachal has resolved to save the land of Gods) and ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’. Police used water cannons to disperse the Hindu protesters. Following the commotion, the Deputy Commissioner announced that the mosque with illegal construction would be sealed. District Magistrate Apoorv Devgan has imposed Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita in seven wards of Mandi city.
The Government will act as per the law : CM Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu
“It has come to light that illegal construction took place in Mandi. A committee will be formed to resolve this dispute. Himachal Pradesh is a peaceful State where all religions are respected. No religion, caste, or sect will be exempted from the law. Our Government will take action according to the law. Illegal constructions will not be tolerated, and those violating the rules will face legal action,” said Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu.
Editorial Perspectives
- Was the administration blind to the illegal construction ? The responsible officials should be imprisoned for life.
- The fact that Muslims built a two-story illegal structure shows that they do not fear the law, Police, administration, or Government. Why are Congress and so-called liberals silent on this ?

Police lathicharge on Hindus demanding the demolition of the mosque, many injured
Protest against the illegal mosque in Shimla escalates

Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) : The demand for the demolition of a five-storey illegal mosque in the Sanjauli area of the capital city, Shimla, has intensified. On the morning of 11th September, many Hindus began marching towards the mosque. At that time, the Police arrested Kamal Gautam, the former general secretary of the Hindu Jagran Manch. Angered by this, the Hindus intensified the protest. The Police, in an attempt to stop the Hindus, resorted to lathi charging and fired water cannons. Reports indicate that several Hindus were injured.
1. The Congress-led Government in the State had turned the area into a military camp to prevent Hindus from protesting against the illegal mosque, with numerous barricades set up.
2. As soon as the unarmed Hindu protesters reached Sanjauli, the Police began lathi charging them. (Would the Police have reacted the same way if the protest had been led by religious fanatic Muslims ? Hindus conduct peaceful protests, is that why weapons are used against them ? – Editor)
3. For the past week, the Government has failed to find a resolution to the Sanjauli mosque dispute
What is the matter ?
On 31st August, a local youth, Yashpal, got into an argument with some Muslim boys. Later, the Muslims attacked Yashpal and seriously injured him. It was later discovered that these boys had taken refuge in the Sanjauli mosque. Hindus gathered and not only demanded action against these boys but also claimed that the mosque itself was illegal. The Police arrested four individuals named Gulnawaz, Sarik, Saif Ali, and Rohit. However, the authorities took a lenient stance on the mosque, which became the focal point of the incident. Local Hindus have alleged that out of the five stories of the mosque, only two are legal. The remaining three stories were built after 2010. The Shimla Municipal Corporation had issued 30-35 notices to the mosque during the construction, yet work continued. The municipal corporation demolished illegal constructions in the surrounding areas but did not take any action on the mosque. Today, this five-story mosque stands in the heart of the city. The Congress Government in the State has washed its hands of the issue, stating that the matter is still pending in Court.
Editorial Perspective
- The Police, under the Congress Government of Himachal Pradesh, are suppressing Hindus instead of taking action against the illegal mosque.
- When something happens against Muslims, the Police and the judiciary immediately step in to protect them. But now, against an illegal mosque, the authorities do nothing, and when Hindus raise their voices, the Police use lathi on them. Is this the Police’s way of showing their strength ?
- What else can be expected from the Police under Congress Government that passed the Waqf Act to appease Muslims ?
