Kuwait : An Egyptian man convicted of raping 18 children was hanged on a gallows in the parking lot of a Kuwaiti prison. According to the evidence presented at his trial, Hajjaj Saadi had lured 18 young children, both boys and girls, onto rooftops in the Hawalli area of Kuwait, where he raped them.
Saadi has been in Kuwaiti detention since 2007. He was caught as he was about to board a flight to Egypt. He confessed to the rapes but later recanted that confession, claiming it was given under duress. He’s also complained that the Egyptian consul did not give him any assistance.
International human rights campaigners tried to get Saadi’s sentence commuted, along with the sentence of Ahmad Abdulsalam al-Baili, but were unsuccessful. After a six year moratorium on executions, Kuwaiti has resumed hanging criminals convicted of capital crimes. Interestingly, all five men hanged since executions resumed have been foreign born.
