New Delhi : Opposing the Centre's stand, the Tamil Nadu government has urged the Supreme Court to scrap the controversial Sethusamundram Ship Channel project as it would hamper marine biodiversity. It also sought a direction to the Centre for declaring the Ram Sethu a national monument.

In its affidavit, the state supported the findings of the R K Pachauri Committee that found the project not viable, either economically or ecologically. The Centre, in its reply to the report, had said it wished to go ahead with the Rs 25,000 crore project due to its economic, navigational and strategic advantages and also since Rs 829.32 crore had already been incurred on it.
