Anitha’s mother: Death minimum punishment

By Aadharsh – KALPETTA

“Death sentence is the minimum punishment the system can give to them,” said Anitha’s mother Sulochana after the Wayanad District Sessions Court on Wednesday imposed the death sentence on Kalathil Nassar and Abdul Gafoor, who brutally raped and killed her daughter about two years ago.

“We wanted her to become a teacher. That’s why we sent her for higher studies despite financial difficulties. They should have let her live,” an emotional Sulochana said.

“They doused the light of our lives. I think the killers just got what they deserved,” said Anitha’s father Viswananthan Nair. Anitha’s brother Aneesh, a Plus Two student, was also present during the pronouncement of the verdict.

Anitha, who was strangled to death by the duo on August 9, 2011, was a third year BA Economics student of a private institute in Mananthavady. Nassar, the first accused, had taken up a contract job to dig a well in Viswanathan Nair’s courtyard.

He befriended  Anitha claiming that he was a ‘black magic expert’ and could help her secure a rank in the degree examinations. He performed black magic rituals in a temporary shed adjacent to Anitha’s house and sexually abused her several times by making her believe that she would acquire good fortune as result of the abuse.

Nassar had also promised that he would marry her. But, when she insisted on marriage, Nassar, along with Gafoor, the second accused, hatched a plan to kill Anitha.

On the fateful day, while Anitha was on her way to the college, the duo lured her to a pleasure trip. They purchased a plastic sheet from a shop in Mananthavady before boarding a Thirunelly-bound private bus.

They got down at Kattikulam and had tea from a hotel there. According to the evidence adduced by an eye-witness during the trial, the trio walked towards the reserve forest area, afterwards.

The convicts took her inside the forest area near the forest office in Appappara and took turns to rape her, the prosecution said.

Later, they strangled Anitha with her shawl and battered her head with a rock to ensure death. They also took away her ornaments that included a chain, a pair of earrings and a ring.
