Ban on Sree Ganehsa idols made of ‘Plaster of Paris (PoP)’ continues in Goa

Panaji (Goa): The ban on making or sale of Sree Ganesha idols made of PoP imposed last year will be strictly implemented even this year. The above information was given by Shri. Nikhil Desai, the managing director of Goa Handicraft Development Corporation.  As per the information given by Shri. Desai to this reporter, it is not necessary to issue a fresh order this year banning sale of Sree Ganesha idols made of PoP and the order issued last year in this connection will be operative even this year.

Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) had recently made a demand in its memorandum submitted to the State Government of Goa for imposing ban on sale of Sree Ganesha idols made of PoP wherein it has been mentioned that if such order imposing ban on idols was issued in time, the sculptors would be deterred from making such idols which cause pollution and is also against the science. Even people would become aware of not getting such idols. The spiritual perspective behind making of idols from clay instead of PoP has also been explained in the memorandum.

Science, Technology and Environment Department had imposed a ban on sale of idols made of PoP as it adversely affects the ecology. In terms of the information given by Shri. Desai, the Corporation’s scheme giving grants comprising Rs. 38 lakhs, to sculptors making idols from clay will continue even this year. About 450 sculptors are likely to avail benefit of this scheme during the current year. An amount of Rs. 50 lakhs will be set aside under this scheme for the year. Every beneficiary sculptor under this scheme, gets grant of Rs.150/- per idol.
