Panaji (Goa) : The State Government of Goa has modified its Preservation of Environment Act due to which the police can now take action against those who make Sree Ganesh idols from ‘Plaster of Paris (PoP)’, call for such idols, store such idols so also sellers of these idols. (Despite such Act, Goa Government could not take any action although such idols were brought for sale from other States as there were certain shortcomings in the Act and therefore, the Act had to be modified now. – Editor SP)

Clause 5 of the Preservation of Environment Act, 1986 has been modified and a paragraph has been added. There is a provision made for the police to take action. If a complaint is received by the local police station chief, police inspector or police sub-inspector about someone under their jurisdiction making idols from PoP, ordering such idols from outside for sale, for storing the idols or actual sale, they can take action.

The police officials can even lodge complaint on their own (suo moto) and take action. Sanatan Sanstha has been advising for the last 10 years and Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) for the past 6 years that an idol of Sree Ganesha made of PoP in not scientific and had submitted memorandum to the Government for banning such idols.

The Goa Government has imposed a ban on such idols but due to the drawback in the Act, no legal action could be taken against the concerned. Last year, a truck carrying Sree Ganehsa idols made of PoP to Goa from another State was stopped at Patradevi Naka but was later allowed to be taken to Mapusa and HJS had carried out demonstrations against that decision. In view of the same, modifications have been carried out to the Act.
