Mumbai: Maharashtra Government had made an anti-Dharma appeal to all sculptors and public Ganesha festival committees to make the Ganesha idols from paper pulp and immerse them in artificial water tanks for conservation of ecology; but the sculptors and Ganesha festival coordination committee has opposed the concept leading to failure of the Government’s plan. In fact, the sculptors and public Ganesha festival committees have warned the Government against such concept. The Government representatives were told not to target Hindu festivals under the guise of pollution; but first pay attention to the pollution caused during the festivals of followers of other religions. The Government representatives, therefore, had to leave the scene. A meeting to discuss celebration of environment-friendly Ganesha festival was held at ‘Yashwantrao Chavan Pratishthan’ on behalf of Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) and Environment Department. The meeting was attended by environment minister Mr. Suresh Shetty, minister for environment (State), Mr. Sachin Ahir, the department’s Secretary Smt. Valsa Nair Singh, Mr. Radheshyam Mopalwar, the Secretary, MPCB, Shiv Sena leader Mr. Leeladhar Dake, its MLA Mr. Vinod Ghosalkar, the President of public Ganesha festival coordination committee- Mr. Naresh Dahibavkar, the President of Mumbai suburban Sculptors’ Association, Mr. Anna Tondwalkar among other dignitaries.

The meeting began with a sculptor from Kanakavali explaining the specialities of making Sree Ganesha idols from paper-pulp on behalf of the Government; but Advocate Dahibavkar gave the reference of IIT’s research report and claimed that the paper-pulp absorbs Oxygen from the water due to which fishes and other aquatic animals die. The attempt of the Government to misguide Ganesha-devotees thus failed. It was also appealed to the sculptors to make idols from clay and not from Plaster of Paris (PoP). Shri. Tondwalkar raised a strong objection and said that it was because of the incompetency of the Government that sculptors had to use PoP for making idols. The facilities extended to non-Hindus are not extended to Hindu sculptors. The Government pays no attention to the pollution taking place due to other factors and criticizes only Ganesha festival. Both the ministers tried to understand the difficulties faced by Ganesh festival committees. Later, it was declared on behalf of the Government that from next year, a coordination committee would be formed to bring about changes as this year there has already been delay in the matter and during every festival, a drive to create awareness on conservation of environment would be undertaken.
