Thane (Maharashtra): Mayor, Mr. Ashok Vaity assured the delegation of Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) that necessary action would be taken against those denigrating Sree Ganesha idols and immersion of the idols would be done as per ‘Dharma-shastra’.

HJS delegation called on the Mayor of Thane with the demands that ‘Municipal Corporation should not ask the devotees to immerse idols in artificial water tanks but should allow them to immerse the idols in natural source of water. Immersion in artificial water tanks resulting in denigration of idols should be stopped’ when the Mayor gave the above assurance.

H. B. P. Eknath Maharaj Sadgir, ‘Konkan-region Dharma-prasar-chief’ of VHP, Mr. Ram Masurkar of Sreeram Sena, Mr. Rocky Hindustani, joint-chief of Bajarang Dal, Thane, Mr. Rajesh Murty of Hindu Mahasabha, Mr. Appasaheb Bachkar of Yoga-vedant Samiti, Mr. Shivaji Vatkar, the district coordinator of HJS for Mumbai, Thane and Raigad etc. were among the delegation that comprised of 25 devout Hindus.

Mr. Shivaji Vatkar of HJS told Mr. Vaity, Mayor that it was observed for past few years that the idols of Sree Ganesha were immersed in artificial water tanks and later such immersed idols were loaded on a dumper and thrown from the bridge at Thane creek.

This leads to denigration of the idols and hurting religious sentiments of Hindus. The Mayor was explained that immersion of idols does not cause pollution and about the movement undertaken by HJS to celebrate Sree Ganesha festival as per ‘Dharmashastra’.

The delegation also met the officials of ‘Solid Waste Department’ of the Municipality and requested them that the idols should not be disposed of as other solid waste. The officials assured that this topic will be discussed in the planning meeting to be held before the festival. HJS will soon be submitting a memorandum to Mr. Milind Patankar, the Chairman of the Standing Committee and Municipal Commissioner R. A. Rajiv.
