Mumbai: A delegation of Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) recently called on Mrs. Shraddha Jadhav, the Mumbai Mayor, Mr. Sunil Prabhu, leader of the House and Mr. Rahul Shevale, the President of the Standing Committee to make a demand that ‘the Mumbai Municipal Corporation (MMC)’ should not build artificial water reservoirs and tanks for immersion of Sree Ganesha-idols and the idols be immersed in natural water source as per the science.’

Mr. Shivaji Vatkar, the district-coordinator of HJS for Mumbai, Thane and Raigad said, “Last year MMC had constructed artificial water tanks and Sree Ganesha devotees were compelled to immerse the idols in those water tanks. The idols taken from the devotees for immersion were taken out and carried to nearby hutments cutting off their hands and legs. The broken limbs of idols were then ground and the soil collected from the same was thrown in the gutters, in gardens and used for making bricks. These are all anti-Dharma activities, against the science.”

The proofs of complaints lodged with the police, photographs of such anti-Dharma activities and the related news items published in the newspapers were shown to the Mayor and the above referred municipal councilors. They were also shown proof of information given by the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board and environmentalists that immersion of Sree Ganesha idols does not cause water pollution. Only 1 % of the idols of public ‘Ganeshotsava’ committees and 4% idols of individuals are immersed in the artificial water tanks constructed by spending lot of money, informed the Committee.

The effluents containing chemicals and water carried to rivers and sea through drainage pipes, in fact, pollute the rivers and the sea. ‘Mithi’ River is the best example of the same. The mayor and other members were quite stunned to know the details in the matter and assured that they would consider preventing such denigration by not building artificial water tanks.”

Mr. Satish Sonar, Mrs. Varsha Thakar and Miss Hema Wadekar were the other members of the HJS delegation.
