Mumbai: As per Hindu ‘Dharmashastra’, it is necessary to immerse idols of Sree Ganesh in the natural water resources, sea or flowing water; but the urban development department of the Maharashtra Government has directed to immerse Sree Ganesh idols by constructing artificial water ponds or tanks giving the reason of water pollution. An order has been issued on 18th January 2010 to all departments. Immersion of idols in artificial ponds result in denigration of idols as these idols are later powdered and bricks are made out of them leading to hurting religious sentiments of Hindus. Taking the above facts in consideration, the Government should withdraw that order and grant permission to immerse idols as per ‘Dharmashastra’. The above demand was made through a memorandum submitted to the Governor of Maharashtra Mr. K. Shankaranarayanan on behalf of Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS).

A delegation of HJS, led by Mr. Shivaji Vatkar, the coordinator of HJS for Mumbai, Thane and Raigad districts, recently called on the Governor at ‘Rajbhavan’ and made the above demand. The delegation comprised of Mr. Ravindran Mannanur of Keraliya Mandir Paripalan Samiti, Mr. A. K. G. Nair, Trustee of Sree Ayyappa Temple and ex- Income Tax Commissioner, Mr. N. B. Kurup of Sabarimala Devsthana, Mumbai and HJS member, Mrs. Varsha Thakar besides, Mr. Shivaji Vatkar.

Mr. Vatkar said on the occasion, “Last year, artificial ponds were constructed at Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane and other places forcing the devotees to immerse idols in those ponds. It was observed by HJS that it had resulted in denigration of the idols. Such despicable things should be prevented.” The Governor accepted the memorandum and assured to forward the same to the Chief Minister with appropriate recommendation.
