Contoversy of immersion of Ganesha idols in sewage water

Bhadrapad Shuddha Navami

Ambarnath (Maharahstra): Sree Ganesha idols are immersed in Waldhuni River flowing past the famous Shiva temple by people living in and around Ambarnath for the last so many years. Since the last two years, however, sewage is being dumped into the river and the water has become polluted; but before that, water of the river was quite clean and clear. (What does ANS and other environmentalists, who are making so much of fuss about water pollution due to immersion, have to say on this? The municipalities should pay attention to such pollution rather than wasting time and money in constructing artificial water tanks! – Editor)

The town council has made arrangements for immersion of idols in the polluted water flowing under the ‘Govinda-teerth’ bridge which can lead to dispute between the devotees and town council. Shri. Gulabrao Karanjule, the then mayor had allowed to immerse idols in the big ancient water pool that was built during the regime of Peshavas. It used to be filled with clean water to avoid immersion of the idols in polluted water.

Even this year, this arrangement has been done; but the town council has made arrangements for immersion even in polluted water which can result in causing furor among the locals. Shri. Karanjule said that immersion of Sree Ganesha idols in polluted water is desecration of the deity. Arrangements for immersion should begin a month prior to the festival; but it is never done. In the meanwhile, Maharashtra Navanirman Sena has declared that they would not allow immersion in such water. (First contaminate natural water sources and then advocate immersion in artificial water tanks to prevent pollution is the policy of administration. Is it proper? Alert, prudent Ganehsa-devotees and pro-Hindus must take firm action in this regard! – Editor)
