Goa Govt. to give grant for clay idol of Sree Ganesh

Panaji (Goa): Shri. Gurudas Gawas, the Chairman of Goa Handicrafts and Small Industries Development Corporation declared in a press conference here that the Government would give grant of Rs. 100/- per idol to motivate local artists to make Sree Ganesh idols from clay and discourage making of idols from ‘Plaster of Paris (POP)’ which would help in conserving the ecology of the place. Shri. Nikhil Desai, the Managing Director of the Corporation and Shri. Shirodkar, its manager also attended the press conference.

It has been observed that some people prefer to buy idols made of PoP in view of its low cost compared to idols made of clay. But PoP is detrimental to the atmosphere; and therefore, the Corporation has taken such decision to bring a ban on PoP idols. (It is very good that the State Govt. of Goa has taken such decision to conserve ecology; but it would have been even better had it tried to know the spiritual science behind the same – Editor). 173 sculptors have so far registered with the Corporation and Shri. Gawas made an appeal to the remaining sculptors to register themselves.

Shri. Gawas said further that the financial position of the Corporation has improved and compared to last financial year when the Corporation incurred loss of Rs. 123 lakhs, during the year 2006-07, it has earned profit of Rs. 8.00 lakhs and in the current financial year, the profit is expected to be around Rs. 50 lakhs as the Corporation’s turnover has gone up to Rs. 29 crores as compared to last year’s turnover of Rs. 18 crores. The Corporation is preparing a scheme to encourage artistes. The Corporation is also pondering over sale of iron bars manufactured by it to the public works dept. or other government departments.

(This is possible only if the iron is of good quality – Editor)
