Incident involving fanatics threatening to damage Ganesh Mandal and Shri Ganesh idol
Mumbai – In Parel, Mumbai, tensions arose when a group of fanatics returning from Eid celebrations entered a Hindu-majority locality and raised provocative slogans. The group also allegedly threatened to damage the local Ganeshotsav Mandal and the Shri Ganesh idol. Following this incident, the Bhoiwada Police Station has served a notice on activists of the Ganeshotsav Mandal in the nearby Naigaon area. Police said the notice was issued to gather facts and circumstances needed for the investigation of a case registered on 27 August.

Threatening tone of the police notice
According to the notice, the recipients were directed not to tamper with any evidence and not to threaten, induce, or make any promise to any person or witness who knows the facts of the case in order to prevent them from revealing the truth to the court or the police. They were also instructed to produce all relevant documents and materials before the police during the investigation, to disclose the complete truth without concealing any information, and to ensure that no offence is committed in the future. The notice further warned that failure to comply with these conditions or to appear for questioning could result in arrest.

“If jihadi fanatics come to our doorsteps and engage in intimidation, hooliganism, and aggressive sloganeering to terrorise Hindus, then Hindus will naturally resist in self-defence. “Following the incident in Parel, the Bhoiwada Police have served a notice under Section 35(3) on Akshay Kshirsagar. Whenever the Hindu community or our activists raise their voice against injustice, targeting the activists themselves is wrong. We respect the law and will fully cooperate with the investigation. However, if attempts are made to harass our activists unnecessarily under the guise of legal process, the Vishva Hindu Parishad will not remain silent. The police must bring out the truth without taking one-sided action; otherwise, we will be compelled to take to the streets and launch a strong agitation.”

“Raising one’s voice against injustice is the right of every citizen. Speaking up against injustice has always been our stance, remains our stance, and will continue to be our stance! If attempts are made to indulge in pressure politics by targeting our activists, we will resist it firmly through democratic means and within the legal framework.”
Misleading information and evasion by the police
When a representative of the daily newspaper Sanatan Prabhat contacted an officer at the Bhoiwada Police Station over the telephone regarding the notice, the officer provided false information claiming that no such notice had been issued. Other personnel evaded giving information by claiming that senior officers have stepped out.

“It is entirely improper to send such notices to devout Hindu activists when they are innocent. In this matter, representatives from the VHP visited the Byculla Police Station and met with senior police officers. We will provide full legal assistance to the devout Hindu activist who has been served with the notice,” said Rajiv Chaubey of the Vishva Hindu Parishad.
