Hindus in Bangladesh outraged by the insult to Prabhu Shri Ram

Dhaka, Bangladesh – Protesting against the insult to Prabhu Shri Ram in Bangladesh, Hindus held a torchlight procession in Dhaka on the night of 19 June. The Hindu students leading the procession alleged that just a few days ago, a violent mob of radical jihadis insulted Shri Ram by placing a shoe on His idol. This is a grave insult to Shri Rama and the Hindu community. If the culprits are not arrested within 72 hours, a memorandum will be submitted to the Ministry of Religious Affairs. Furthermore, besides meeting Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, protests will be registered by organising various rallies and programmes.

- The massive torchlight procession in Dhaka started from the Shahbagh intersection, passed through Shahbagh Square and Moteshwar Bhavan Road, and reached the National Press Club. Those participating in the procession were chanting “Jai Shri Ram” and other slogans.
- Two separate programmes were also organised in Dhaka on the morning of 19 June to protest the insult to Prabhu Shri Ram. Two factions of an organisation named “Hindu Mahajot” held separate events. One of these programmes was held in front of the National Press Club, while the other was organised via a press conference at the Dhaka Reporters Unity.
- Hindus protested against the radicals by forming a human chain in front of the National Press Club. The “National Committee for Puja Celebrations” has announced nationwide protests against the insult to Shri Ram.
- Prior to the incident in Dhaka, Hindus had also staged a protest against the insult to Shri Ram in Palashbari, located in the Gaibandha district of northern Bangladesh.
Shri Ram temples to be built in all 64 districts
The Hindus participating in the procession declared that Shri Ram temples will now be built one after another not only in Palashbari, but in all 64 districts of Bangladesh. They expressed their displeasure with the Tarique Rahman government, accusing it of adopting a soft approach towards radicals. They stated that due to this soft stance of the government, incidents of atrocities against Hindus are on the rise. They demanded that the government ensure the security of Hindus.
What is the case?
The construction of a Shri Ram temple, featuring an 81-foot-tall idol of Prabhu Shri Ram, was underway in Palashbari, Gaibandha. Local Hindus were installing this idol by building a temple on their own land. Opposing this, radical jihadis led by Jamaat-e-Islami launched a campaign. A mob of radicals shouted intense slogans outside the temple and threw shoes at the under-construction idol of Shri Ram. The Hindu community registered a complaint with the police regarding this matter; however, not a single accused person has been arrested yet. This has fueled growing anger among Hindus, who are now holding rallies and demonstrations at various places to demand action against the culprits.
