Mumbai – In a significant crackdown on extremist activities, Maharashtra’s Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has exposed a sophisticated network using local football clubs to radicalise young Muslim individuals in the state. The operation, which began with raids and detention of suspects for questioning on February 15, has drawn attention to potential cross-border links and raised concerns about youth involvement in such schemes. The probe continues to reveal intriguing details about how everyday activities, such as sports, might be exploited for sinister purposes.
Maharashtra ATS conducted raids in Ahilyanagar and Yavatmal districts of Maharashtra three days ago, uncovering shocking links to terror modules.

The ATS launched coordinated searches at multiple locations across Yavatmal (mainly, Pusad and Umarkhed areas) and Ahilyanagar districts, based on solid intelligence about efforts to steer youths toward extremism. During the midnight raids, authorities seized mobile phones, electronic devices, CCTV footage, objectionable documents, and even swords from some sites. More than a dozen suspects, including educated youths acting as recruiters, were detained for questioning. Officials emphasised that the action targeted a conspiracy to transform participants into hardened extremists through these clubs, with some boys reportedly sent outside Maharashtra, such as to Kerala or West Bengal, disguised as football teams for further indoctrination.
At the heart of the investigation is a Nagpur-based grocer who allegedly operated a soccer club in Yavatmal’s Pusad as a front to indoctrinate participants into radical ideologies. Preliminary findings suggest that many of these youths, presented as aspiring footballers, maintained contacts with cross-border radical outfits. The network reportedly preyed on football-loving children and young people in areas with active clubs, deliberately targeting them for brainwashing and pushing them toward terrorism-linked activities.
This development has sparked discussions about “football jihad”, highlighting fears of a broader conspiracy to radicalise vulnerable groups through the medium of sport. As the interrogation and analysis of seized materials progress, more shocking revelations could emerge.
Authorities have assured that the operation is ongoing, with a focus on protecting national security while ensuring due process.
