Panaji, Goa – Hindu Janajagruti Samiti has submitted a memorandum to Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, demanding the immediate cancellation of licences of all liquor shops located within 100 metres of schools and temples. The Samiti has also urged the government to take strict action against shopkeepers who violate child rights and disturb public order.

According to the memorandum, during the recently concluded winter session of the Goa Legislative Assembly, the government informed the House that 91 liquor shops are currently operating in close proximity to schools. The Samiti stated that this revelation is a matter of grave concern from both social and moral perspectives.

The memorandum highlighted that the presence of liquor shops near educational institutions increases the likelihood of students being adversely influenced by alcohol consumption, potentially leading to addiction at a young age. It further pointed out that incidents of harassment, unruly conduct, and indecent behaviour by individuals under the influence of alcohol create an atmosphere of fear and insecurity, especially among female students.

The memorandum also stated that these factors are detrimental to the overall physical, mental, and moral development of children. It emphasized that allowing liquor shops to operate near schools and temples violates child rights and undermines public order.

The Hindu Janajagruti Samiti has called upon the Goa government to take immediate and decisive action to protect the future of children, preserve the moral health of society, and maintain law and order in the state.
