Wakf claim overturned; Gurubasava Virakta Math reclaims land

A relentless struggle has finally succeeded!

  • Across the country, the Waqf Board has taken control of thousands of acres of land through illegal and arbitrary claims over others’ land. Must every rightful owner be forced into a long legal battle just to reclaim what already belongs to them?
  • It is time to curb this unchecked authority of the Waqf Board and restore the land to its rightful owners. – Editor, HJS

Sindagi (Karnataka): After a relentless struggle, 1.30 acres of prime land worth crores belonging to the Gurubasava Virakta Math in Sindagi, which the Wakf Board had usurped, has finally been restored to the Math. Ningappa Gurubasavappa Pattanshetti, Secretary of the Gurubasava Virakta Math Seva Samiti, shared this good news while addressing the press.

The 1.28-acre land situated under Survey No. 1020 in Sindagi town of Vijayapura district had been recorded in the revenue documents (Pahani/RTC) as a property of the Karnataka Sunni Wakf Board.

Earlier, during the tenure of the late Siddalingayya Swamiji, the 11th column in the record of rights remained blank. However, during 2018–2019, the land was illegally designated as ‘Qabrastan Wakf Board Property’. Realising the illegality, devotees initiated an agitation, staging multiple protests over the matter.

After 11 months of legal battle to free the Virakta Math’s property from the Wakf Board’s control, the court has now ordered that the land belongs solely to the Math and has no connection whatsoever with the Wakf Board.

The Sindagi Math is not an ordinary religious centre; its contribution to the field of education is noteworthy. With the aim of providing quality education to students in surrounding rural areas, the Math has established several schools and colleges. Numerous educational institutions, including the Shri Guru Kumareshwar Religious School in Byadgi, operate under its administration. Thousands of students have shaped their future through these institutions.
