HJS demands legal action against actor Ranveer Singh for insulting Chavundi Daiva

Panaji, 1 December 2025 — At the closing ceremony of the 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa, Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh mocked the divine form of Chavundi Daiva as portrayed in the Kannada film Kantara – Chapter 1, and even referred to the revered Daiva as a “female ghost.” This act has deeply hurt the sentiments of Hindu devotees, especially those belonging to the Tulu community, for whom Chavundi Daiva is a sacred and family deity.

In response, the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti submitted a written complaint-cum-representation on 1st December to the Inspector of Panaji Police Station, demanding that a criminal offence be immediately registered against Ranveer Singh for insulting Chavundi Daiva and hurting Hindu religious sentiments. The memorandum was submitted to Sub-Inspector Shri. Sahin Shetye by Shri. Pramod Tuyekar and Shri. Dilip Shetye on behalf of the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti.

The representation states that Chavundi Daiva is the revered and family Deity of the Tulu community. Calling the Deity a ‘ghost’ and imitating her divine form for entertainment purposes is highly disrespectful and an attack on the Hindu community’s sacred beliefs. This incident has caused anger among the people, and it cannot be ruled out that it may disturb public peace. Therefore, a criminal case should be registered against Ranveer Singh under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 for deliberately hurting religious sentiments and promoting enmity in society, and the matter should be thoroughly investigated.

The Samiti has also demanded that the organisers and officials of IFFI prepare a clear code of conduct to ensure that no Deity of any religion is insulted in future events and that this code is strictly implemented. The Hindu Janajagruti Samiti further expects that Ranveer Singh should publicly apologise and give an assurance that he will refrain from making such statements or performing such acts in the future. The Samiti has also appealed to all Hindu brethren to condemn this insult in a peaceful, restrained, but firm manner by following the legal process.
