Central Government must implement similar legislation nationwide: Shri. Ramesh Shinde, Hindu Janajagruti Samiti.

Assam has taken a historic step towards protecting women’s rights and safety by passing the ‘Assam Prohibition of Polygamy Bill 2025’. The legislation includes stringent provisions – up to 10 years’ imprisonment and fines for second marriages conducted by concealing prior unions, and up to 2 years’ imprisonment with fines of ₹1–1.5 lakh for village heads, kazis, priests, or parents assisting such marriages. These measures aim to curb the mental, social, and economic exploitation of women. Furthermore, individuals convicted under the Act will be barred from government employment, social welfare schemes, and contesting elections, thus strengthening legal and social accountability. Victims will receive compensation, along with legal and financial support.

In a press release, HJS’ National Spokesperson, Shri. Ramesh Shinde stated, “Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) congratulates Assam Chief Minister Shri. Himanta Biswa Sarma for this pioneering reform and urges the Central Government to implement similar legislation nationwide.”

He further stated that, “Globally, 130 to 140 countries, including Turkey, France, America, Germany, Sweden, England, Australia, Canada, Japan, Spain, and Italy, have either regulated or fully banned polygamy. Though India has relevant laws, they are not uniformly applicable to all religions. This disparity continues to endanger women’s autonomy, emotional security, and family life. A nationwide, uniform law modelled on Assam’s is therefore essential for strengthening women’s safety.”
