Cuttack (Odisha) – Stones were pelted at a Durga Puja immersion procession late on the night of October 5th. The immersion procession had started from the Muslim-dominated Dargah Bazaar area of Cuttack towards the riverbank at Devigada. Violence broke out in the Hati Pokhari area at 1:30 a.m. According to the Police, Jihadis objected to the loud music played during the procession. Jihadis threw stones and bottles from the roof. Deputy Superintendent of Police Rishikesh Gyandev is also among the injured. Police officials have imposed a curfew in the entire city. Internet services have also been shut down here. 25 people were injured in the violence. So far, 6 people have been arrested.
1. Police resorted to lathicharge to disperse the crowd. During this time, many vehicles and shops were vandalised.
2. The Vishwa Hindu Parishad called for a bandh on October 6th. The VHP alleged that despite repeated requests, the administration failed to conduct the immersion procession peacefully.
3. Rioters set fires at several places near Gaurishankar Park in the city. Stones were also pelted at fire brigade officials.
Chief Minister Majhi assures strict action against the culprits
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi said that anti-social elements are accused of disrupting communal harmony. Strict action will be taken against the culprits.
