Yavatmal Model Succeeds: Maharashtra Mandir Mahasangh Demands All Temples in State Be Alcohol & Meat-Free

Mumbai/Yavatmal – Following the persistent efforts of the Maharashtra Mandir Mahasangh, encroachments around the 100-year-old Shri Sheetala Mata Mandir premises in Ralegaon, Yavatmal district, have been removed, and the temple area is now free from meat. Due to the meat and mutton shops adjacent to the temple walls, devotees faced significant trouble, and the sanctity of the temple was being compromised. This action by the local administration has strengthened the temple culture. The Mahasangh has demanded that the government make the premises of all temples across the state free from alcohol and meat, on the lines of the Yavatmal model, and has resolved to intensify the ongoing statewide campaign for this cause.

Temples are not just structures but centers of consciousness and purity (sattvikta). Maharashtra is the land of saints, and temples are places of faith. The presence of alcohol, meat, and mutton shops in the temple vicinity violates the sanctity of the area and causes immense mental distress to devotees. Unfortunately, not only in Yavatmal but across the state, many temples have shops selling meat, mutton, and liquor in their vicinity. Recognizing the seriousness of this issue, the Mahasangh has strongly urged every District Collector and the police administration in the state to initiate immediate action.

In the statewide temple conventions previously organized by the Mandir Mahasangh, resolutions such as ‘Make the premises of temples and pilgrimage sites free from alcohol and meat’ were passed and submitted to the government. The government should implement these immediately. The Mahasangh has issued a clear warning that if the administration does not take timely steps, it will intensify its campaign across the state. In this context, an appeal is also being made to devotees who are facing similar problems near temples in their area or who wish to participate in this ‘Temple Alcohol-Meat Free Campaign’ to contact the Maharashtra Mandir Mahasangh.
