The letter states,
1. The government receives an annual revenue of Rs 30,000 crore from the online ‘real money gaming’ industry. In India the number of users of such apps is over 50 crores. Although the sector is promoting digital innovations, it appears to be causing addiction, financial crises for the users, increase in criminal activities and suicides among youth on a large scale.
2. In India, 19.9 percent of the teenage population is addicted to online gaming and at least 25 youth have dies by suicde after drowning in debt due to online games.
3. Although such online games are sponsored by organizations like the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Dream11, there is no central monitoring system to control them, leading to a huge fraud.
4. Famous sportspersons and movie actors should be prohibited from participating in misleading advertising of such apps. It has been revealed that consumers are being cheated through these advertisements.
5. There is an urgent need for the central government to enact laws to protect the citizens.
