HJS demands prompt action to solve the fecal coliform bacteria problem in Ujani dam

Solapur, June 5 (Corr.) – The problem of contaminated water in Ujani dam has not been solved for the last several years. Despite discussions in the legislature, no concrete action has been taken in this regard. In 2021, fecal coliform bacteria have been found in the Ujani dam backwaters. Discharge of sewage into the dam should be prohibited and the water discharged into the dam should be treated as per the regulations. The administration is ignoring this issue. The Hindu Janajagruti Samiti has demanded that the administration should take strict action against the culprits by investigating this sensitive issue which has claimed the lives of thousands of citizens. A petition to this effect was submitted by a delegation of the Samiti to BJP MLA Subhash Deshmukh and MLA Vijaykumar Deshmukh. Shri. Dattatraya Pise, Shri. Satish Kunchpore and Shri. Hiralal Tiwari were a part of the delegation.

The petition says,

In 2021, the ‘Fecal coliform’ bacteria were found in the Ujani Dam backwaters. It is feared that this will affect the health of thousands of people who drink water from Ujani dam. The dam supplies drinking water to all the villages on the banks of river Bhima, many villages in Solapur district and some water supply schemes in Pune. Even before this, due to the contaminated water in Ujani dam, various ailments have spread among the people of this area. The administration is not paying serious attention to the problem water contamination in Ujani dam.

After being apprised of the issue, MLA Subhash Deshmukh told the Samiti delegation, “The issue of pollution in Ujani Dam is important and I will immediately forward this issue on my letterhead and present it during the starred questions in the upcoming session of the assembly.” MLA Vijay Kumar Deshmukh said, “Will try to raise this issue in the Assembly session”.
