Matter related to issuing notices to Ganesh Mandals in Ichalkaranji

Ichalkaranji (District Kolhapur) : The Municipal Council, under the orders from Maharshtra State Pollution Control Board had issued notices to 320 Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandals prohibiting them from immersions of Shri Ganes idols in Panchagaga river. During the meeting held in Council Hall yesterday on this matter, the councillors rebuked the Pollution Control Board officers for these orders, and hence, the officers bowed to people’s demand. They had to rescind the above order and permit the immersion of Ganesh idols in Panchganga river. (O Hindus, offer gratitude unto feet of Shrikrushna and Shri Ganesh for this success ! – Editor SP)

A meeting of councillors was held in Council Hall which was also attended by Chief Officer Mr. Nitin Desai and President Mrs. Ratnaprabha Bhagawat. In this meeting, Mr. Aba Javale of Jay Janseva party put forth the views on behalf of Hindus. He questioned the propriety of Pollution Control Board to become aware of pollution problem only during Ganesh festival. Therefore, Mr. Amar Durgule of Pollution Control Board had to clarify that Board has not issued warning to Municipal Council that action would be taken against it. Thus, the path of Ganesh Mandals to immerse Ganesh idols in Panchganga river has been cleared.

Ichalkaranji : Written instructions to Ganesh Mandals prohibiting immersion of Ganesh idols in river

september 22, 2012

Ichalkaranji (Dist. Kolhapur, Maharashtra) : Maharashtra Pollution Control Board and Ichalkaranji Municipality have failed to stop the polluted water of all the factories in the city from entering into the Panchaganga river. There was an epidemic of jaundice in that area due to drinking the polluted water from the river Panchaganga. 25 citizens had died in the month of June suffering from jaundice. At that time the Pollution Board kept mum and now in order to avoid their responsibility over the issue, the Pollution Control Board has given instructions to the Kolhapur Municipal Corporation and the Ichalkaranji Municipality. Accordingly the Ichalkaranji Municipality has given a written order to 320 Ganeshotsav Mandals stating, “Do not immerse the idols of Sri Ganesh in the Panchaganga river'. Hindus are furious about this order.

More details are as followed :

1. Mr. Amar Durgule, officer in charge of this area on behalf of Maharashtra Pollution Control Board said that, the Supreme Court has laid down some conditions regarding the pollution of river and the Board has framed some rules accordingly and has sent notices to Kolhapur Municipal Corporation and 12 Municipalities in the District to avoid pollution of the river. Our guards will be vigilant to control the immersion of Sri Ganesh idols in the river.

2. As a result of these notices, the Municipal Corporation has issued an order. While giving permission to Ganeshotsav Mandals, the Municipal Corporation has given the paper of the order too in their hand. Public is very furious about it.

3. It has been given to understand that the Pollution Control Board has given the said order to the Municipality in order to hand over its own responsibility to the Municipal Corporation. Discussions are going on that the Municipality also trying to avoid the responsibility of action to be taken by handing over the order to the Mandals.

4. Normally Idols are being immersed in the mines at Shahapur in Ichalkaranji, but the idols which are taller than 5 ft. have to be immersed in the Panchaganga river as there is no other alternative for that. Hence according to the citizens the order seems to be incorrect.
