Udupi: A protest meeting was held in Udupi on 26th Dec 2006 at 5 p.m. under the auspices of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bhajarang Dal (BD) to protest against the killing of Hindu leader Sukhanand Shetty by Muslims and two of his associates by the police in firing in Mulky recently. Shri. Raghupathi Tantri of VHP in his introductory address labeled the murder of Sukhanand Shetty as an act of Muslim Jehadi’s. He attributed 3 reasons for the communal clashes, namely terrorism, cow slaughter, and conversion. He prayed that the souls of the departed might rest in peace.

Shri. Madhukar Mudradi of Bajarang Dal charged the Muslim mafia for the killing of Sukhanand Shetty. He condemned the police dept. for not giving protection to Shetty in time and for uncalled for police firing resulting in the death of two other Hindu associates. He earged the chief minister to order judicial enquiry regarding the entire incident, to book the culprits immediately and take action against the police personnel who indulged in firing throwing into wind all the procedures laid down in this regard. He announced that statewide agitation will be held in this regard if justice is denied.

Shri.Y.N.R.Rao of (VHP) proposed vote of thanks and reiterated that the guilty police official should be punished. Shri. Vasanth Bhat & Shri.Aravind Holla both from VHP were also on the Dias. 11 members of Hindu Janajagruti Samiti and 4 members of Sanatan Sanstha along with the workers of other Hindu organizations attended the meeting. At the end of the meeting a memorandum was submitted to the deputy commissioner putting forth the demands including the sanction of compensation to the families of the Hindu martyrs and protection to Hindu leaders.
