UP Family That Converted To Islam Undergoes ‘Ghar Wapsi’ Alleging Harassment By A Muslim Man

This may be termed as a faith of convenience, but a family from Uttar Pradesh was extremely convinced to change its religion two times with a span of five years. Five years ago, Dharamveer, a resident of Kotla in Uttar Pradesh’s Saharanpur along with his family had embraced Islam, following differences with his father.

But on Sunday the family went back to their old religion, in a ceremony organised by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) at their request.

According to Dharamveer’s family, they were returning to Hinduism after facing harassment from a Muslim man. “Over a year ago, a man named Asif started harassing my 19-year-old daughter whenever she left the house. I complained about it to his parents, but it did not work. I even approached other people in the community, but they also did not help. Irked by their attitude, my wife and daughter stopped offering namaaz six months back,” Dharamveer alias Mohammad Saad told The India Express.

He also alleged that Asif had made a false claim that the family had borrowed Rs 2.5 lakhs from him and never returned the amount. Faced with harassment and little support from the community, the Jat family decided to go back to their original faith.

Dharamveer, who had assumed the name Mohammad Saad and his wife Mamta who became Mariyam and daughter Shivani who became Zainab in 2012 reconverted on Sunday in a local Arya Samaj temple while his two sons who are away from home will perform Ghar Wapasi once they come back.
