Solapur (Maharashtra): On the seventh day of Ganesha festival, there was squabble between office bearers of Ganesha Mandals and the Dy. Education Officer, Mujawar at Siddheshwar Lake for using school students to undertake ‘Donate idol’ drive. A delegation of Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) and workers of Ganesha Mandals registered their strong objection with the District Collector, towards Government’s support for ‘Donate idol’ drive of ‘Andha-shraddha Nirmulan Samiti (ANS)’. In this background, ANS has declared through a circular that it would not undertake ‘Donate idol’ drive in Solapur.

The police had issued a notice under clause 149 to 4 teachers from 2 schools for the incident which had taken place on 17th September. The teachers had stated that they had taken the students there as per the verbal orders given by the education officer on instructions from the District Collector. On 18th September, HJS members and workers of Ganesha Mandals met the District Collector, Shri. Jagadish Patil and registered their strong opposition to ANiS drive of ‘Donate idols’ and the participation of the Government in such drive. It was told to him that inclusion of school students in a drive which is against the science was wrong. It hurt religious sentiments of Hindus. Shri. Patil said that he had not asked them to collect idols but only to collect ‘nirmalya (stale flowers offered to God)’. He assured that next year, the Government would try to educate the sculptors for using natural colours in painting clay idols.

The circular was then published in local newspapers by a member of ANS, Smt. Shalini Oak declaring that ANiS would not be collecting idols nor ‘nirmalya’.
