Mumbai : Mumbai Mayor Sou. Snehal Ambekar assured delegation of Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) that care would be taken to prevent desecration of Ganesh idols during immersion. A petition was submitted to her on behalf of HJS in this connection.
HJS members informed the Mayor that sewage water and solid waste are causing pollution throughout the year and is harmful for the environment; but no attention is being paid to the same. It is wrongly propagated that immersion of Ganesh idols during Ganesh festival that comes once in a year, causes pollution. Under the pretext of pollution, drives like immersion in water tanks and donation of idols are promoted. It is wrong and causes desecration of Ganesh idols. It has to be stopped.
It has been stated in the petition submitted by HJS that ..
- Mumbai Municipal Corporation has passed a resolution and planned to dispose of the idols immersed in water tanks, in unused wells or lakes near Mumbai or holes created due to mines.
- Idols immersed in water tanks at Chembur are broken into pieces and ground and thrown in gardens as soil.
- Photographs of such desecration of idols, newspaper cuttings and information obtained under RTI were enclosed with the petition.
- On learning about such facts, Mayor took a note of it and assured that Mumbai Municipal Corporation would find a solution.
