Tamil Nadu Government scraps ₹246 crore commercial projects to protect temple funds

  • Commendable decision by C. Joseph Vijay’s Government in Tamil Nadu

  • Money from temples to be spent only on religious and temple-related sacred activities

Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay

Chennai, Tamil Nadu – The Tamil Nadu government led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has cancelled 46 temple-related projects approved during the previous DMK government under M.K. Stalin. The decision ensures that movable and immovable temple properties and funds are used exclusively for religious and sacred temple-related activities, and not for any commercial activities.

According to a government order, the previous administration had sanctioned the construction of 29 marriage halls and 17 commercial complexes using temple funds, at an estimated cost of around ₹246 crore. Since work on these projects had not yet begun, the approvals have been revoked in view of the financial condition of the temples.

The Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay also announced in the Assembly that temple funds must be devoted solely to temple purposes. These include heritage preservation, infrastructure development within temple premises, and better facilities for devotees.

For years, income from temples under the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department was diverted toward building marriage halls, commercial complexes, and other non-core projects. This drew opposition from several Hindu organisations, which argued that devotee donations and temple revenues should be spent strictly on temple maintenance, rituals, deity worship, and related religious activities.

The Vijay-led TVK government has now redirected focus toward core temple welfare, addressing long-standing concerns over the management of Hindu endowments.

Editorial Perspective
  • The Tamil Nadu Government’s decision under Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay to restrict temple funds exclusively to religious and sacred activities is truly commendable.
  • State governments across the country should follow this example to safeguard the sanctity of religious endowments and ensure that devotee contributions are used solely for their intended spiritual purpose.
