HJS demands strict legal action against the organisation promoting beef consumption

  • IAP poster in Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation Hospital recommends feeding beef to infants

  • Hindu Janajagruti Samiti submits a representation to the Police Commissioner and Municipal Commissioner of Navi Mumbai

The objectionable pamphlet at Vashi Hospital advising to feed ‘beef’ to infants.

Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra – Through a representation, the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti demanded that the Navi Mumbai Police Commissioner and the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation Commissioner take strict legal action against the organisation and the responsible individuals promoting beef consumption at the Vashi Public Hospital of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation. On this occasion, Dr. Uday Dhuri, along with Ravindra Nalawade, Ashok Sawant, and Govind Dubey from HJS were present. Joint Police Commissioner Deepak Sakore has ordered appropriate action to be taken after investigating the matter.

An official, coloured information poster titled ‘Complementary Feeding Guidelines for Ages 9 to 11 Months’ was put up in the Municipal Corporation hospital on behalf of the ‘Indian Academy of Pediatrics’ (IAP). This pamphlet explicitly mentioned and recommended the inclusion of ‘beef’ in the diet for infants aged 9 to 11 months.

In Maharashtra, under the ‘Maharashtra Animal Preservation (Amendment) Act, 1995’, the slaughter of progeny of cows (cow, bull, bullock), their transport, sale, and the possession of beef have been banned. This being the case, issuing a public appeal to citizens to commit such an illegal act within a government health centre is a direct violation of the law and an open challenge to the administrative system.

The Government of Maharashtra has granted official status to Gau-mata as the ‘Rajyamata’ (State mother). In a State where supreme cultural and legal protection exists, issuing a public appeal for the consumption of the flesh of the ‘Rajyamata’ right inside a Municipal Corporation health centre is a direct insult to State policies, laws, and the sovereign government.

This objectionable pamphlet, which hurts religious sentiments, not only violates legal provisions but also strikes a blow to the religious and emotional identity of crores of citizens. The cow holds unparalleled religious importance in Hindu Dharma, and cow slaughter is considered a heinous sin equivalent to Brahmahatya (the killing of a Brahman). Since 33 crore Deities reside within the cow, many elements from cow urine to cow dung are considered extremely sacred in religious worship. History cannot forget that the first war of independence in the year 1857 against foreign powers flared up precisely because of the use of beef on gun cartridges, which severely hurt religious sentiments.

For those infants who unfortunately do not receive their mother’s milk, Gau-mata is considered the second mother. Against this backdrop, promoting a perverted ideology within government premises that suggests ‘one mother should eat the flesh of another mother’ or prompts feeding it to tender infants, is an act that disrupts social health and creates religious tension.

The protection of cows is not merely a religious duty, but it forms the core backbone of the Indian agricultural system and rural economy. Prabhu Shri Ram’s ancestor, King Dilip, had shown readiness to sacrifice his own life before a lion to protect Gau-mata; this is our historical and cultural ideal.

It is utter ingratitude to eradicate the cow, which holds such unparalleled significance. At a time when Western countries are giving top priority to indigenous Indian breeds of cows through ‘Cow Therapy’ for mental peace, stress relief, and physical health, it is complete ingratitude that the destruction of cow progeny is being supported with government backing in this very country. Today, many countries are taking Indian cows to their homelands and providing them with special care. Conversely, the population of rare indigenous Indian breeds such as Gir, Sahiwal, and Deoni is declining alarmingly in India. Under such circumstances, the promotion of beef consumption by a health institution is a major conspiracy. This incident has hurt the religious sentiments of society, and it is likely to create a serious law and order problem.

Demands made in the representation

  1. Criminal cases should be registered against the ‘Indian Academy of Pediatrics’ organisation, as well as against the concerned officials who permitted this destructive pamphlet at the Vashi Municipal Corporation Hospital.
  2. The administration must be ordered to immediately seize and destroy these controversial and objectionable pamphlets from all government hospitals in the Navi Mumbai area and across the State. The administration must take timely and concrete legal action on this; otherwise, an intense public agitation will be launched, and it should be noted that the entire responsibility for this will rest with the administration.
