A landmark moment in Goa’s spiritual heritage: Pran Pratishtha ceremony at Shri Goveshwar Mahashiv Temple in Old Goa

Old Goa – On 15 February 2026, the auspicious Pran Pratishtha and Kalasharohan ceremony was held with great grandeur at the Goveshwar Mahadev Temple in Old Goa, constructed as per the inspiration of Jagadguru Ramanandacharya Narendraacharyaji Maharaj. The ceremony took place on the occasion of Maha Shivaratri.

Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant and his wife Mrs Sulakshana Sawant participated in the sacred ceremony. Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant arrived at the programme venue in the morning. Initially, he toured the temple and the surrounding area and expressed his happiness about the construction of the temple. Thereafter, the Chief Minister, along with his wife, participated in the Pran Pratishtha ritual. 

This ceremony was attended by Jagadguru Ramanandacharya Narendraacharyaji Maharaj, P.P. Kanifnath Maharaj, and Saints and Sadhus from various Akhadas across the country. The Vedic rituals were conducted by distinguished Vedic scholar Bhalchandra Shouche Guruji from Nashik along with his fellow priests. 

Thousands of devotees expressed their joy with applause. Many Saints and Sadhus who had come from different states such as Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, Telangana, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh were present.

After the religious rites were completed, the Chief Minister, accompanied by his wife, stepped outside the temple and declared it was now open to all devotees for darshan.

Installation of the 12 Jyotirlingas at Goveshwar Mahashiv Temple will significantly boost spiritual tourism in Goa – Dr Pramod Sawant, Chief Minister

Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant highlighted that Goa has a rich cultural tradition. He said that during Portuguese rule, there were attempts to destroy temples, mathas and Dharma, but our ancestors preserved cultural traditions. He added that an ancient temple at Old Goa had once been destroyed, and now it has been constructed again. He stated that with the installation of the twelve Jyotirlingas in one place here, devotees from Goa, Maharashtra and Karnataka will not need to go to different places to have darshan of all twelve Jyotirlingas. 

He said that this temple will further enhance Goa’s culture and will be a big boost for spiritual tourism. He also praised the work done by Maharaj in the field of helping people leave addictions, protecting the environment, and safeguarding religion, nation and culture.

Features of the temple

The Goveshwar Mahadev Temple is constructed of Chunar stone, with stone carvings, and no iron was used in the construction. All twelve Jyotirlingas have been installed at one location so that devotees can have darshan of all twelve at the same place. 

Launch of ‘Goveshwar Mahima Sanhita’

The holy text  ‘Goveshwar Mahima Sanhita’, written by Jagadguru Ramanandacharyaji Narendraacharyaji Maharaj, was released at the temple by the Governor of Goa, P. Ashok Gajapathi Raju. Maharaj said that this book is a presentation of the Vedic and Sanatan tradition of Goa. He also said that the book runs to approximately 1,400 pages and will become an important historical document and will be a new chapter in the cultural history of Goa.

Jagadguru Ramanandacharya Narendraacharyaji Maharaj expresses gratitude to Sachchidananda Parabrahman (Dr) Jayant Athavale

Maharaj extended gratitude to Sachchidananda Parabrahman (Dr) Jayant Athavale and praised the work of the Sanatan Sanstha and the Saints and devotees present at the ceremony. Maharaj said that his relationship with Dr Athavale is very old. He stated that the Hindu Janjagruti Samiti was established from a common inspiration. He also praised the work of Dr Athavale in spreading Dharma and spiritual knowledge

Felicitation of Jagadguru Ramanandacharyaji Maharaj and P.P. Kanifnath Maharaj by Sanatan Sanstha 

Jagadguru Ramanandacharyaji Maharaj and his successor, P.P. Kanifnath Maharaj, were felicitated on behalf of Sanatan Sanstha by Shrisatshakti (Mrs) Binda Nilesh Singbal, who is one of the spiritual heirs of Sachchidananda Parabrahman (Dr) Athavale. She presented them with a shawl, a shriphal (coconut), and a sattvik image of Lord Shiva created by Sanatan.

On this occasion, referring to the Saints present, P.P. Maharaj said, “One understands how radiant Saints are after seeing the Saints of Sanatan.” 

He enquired with concern about the health of Sachchidananda Parabrahman (Dr) Athavale. He later said to everyone, “I greatly appreciate the work of Sachchidananda Parabrahman (Dr) Athavale. He has written many small booklets so that people may understand Dharma.” He said that during his next visit to Goa, he shall visit Sanatan Ashram to meet Dr Athavale.”
