Illegal construction at Panhala Fort raises questions on administrative failure

Memorandum submitted by Hindu organisations to District Collector seeking immediate action.

  • That citizens must submit memoranda to remove unauthorised encroachments exposes serious administrative failure and a lack of accountability.
  • Such illegal construction at a UNESCO World Heritage site, in violation of archaeological norms, risks damaging Bharat’s global credibility and jeopardising future heritage funding. – Editor.

Kolhapur, Maharashtra – At Parashar Tirtha (Sadoba Lake) on the historic Panhala Fort, an unauthorised three-storey structure and other religious encroachments have come up in the area. Various pro- Hindu organisations from Kolhapur have demanded that these encroachments be demolished immediately, failing which a ‘Fort Cleanliness Campaign’ will be launched.

A memorandum in this regard was submitted on 27 January to Kolhapur District Collector Amol Yedge.

Office-bearers of various Hindu organisations, including Hindu Ekta Andolan, Vishwa Hindu Parishad, Shri Shivpratishthan Hindustan, and others, were present on the occasion.

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Hindu Ekta Andolan have been pursuing the issue for the past two years. An inquiry conducted by the Chief Executive Officer has revealed that the land in question is government-owned and that no permission was obtained for the construction. Despite this, no action has been taken for over a year. The organisations stated that this constitutes a serious administrative lapse and demanded the immediate suspension of the officials responsible.
