BJP MLA seeks nationwide ban on halal certification

MLA Mohan Mate raises issue in State Assembly during the Winter session.

Nagpur (Maharashtra): BJP legislator Mohan Mate has sought a countrywide ban on the halal certification system, stating that illegal certifications issued by certain private Islamic organisations threaten Bharat’s sovereignty and national security.

Raising the issue during the winter session of the state legislative assembly in Nagpur earlier this month, Mr. Mate said that the system had ceased to be merely a commercial practice and had emerged as a serious national concern. He urged the Centre to impose a countrywide ban on halal certification on the lines of the decision taken by the Uttar Pradesh Government.

Seeks law to protect temple trust lands

The BJP MLA also flagged encroachments on temple trust lands, claiming that land mafias had illegally occupied thousands of acres of farmland belonging to religious institutions. He said temple trusts were being deprived of revenue, forcing devotees to seek donations even for routine activities such as cleaning temple ponds and organising festivals.

Calling the situation “unworthy of Maharashtra,” Mr. Mate invoked the ideals of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and said temple trusts and their properties must be protected in that spirit. He demanded the immediate implementation of a strict anti-land grabbing law, on the lines of legislation in Gujarat and Karnataka, along with the formation of special investigation teams to probe alleged land grabs.
