19-year-old Vedic Scholar creates history in Kashi

  • Ahilyanagar’s Devavrat Rekhe earns the title ‘Dandakrama Vikramaditya’

  • Completes the highly challenging 50-day Dandakrama Ved Parayana in Kashi

Ahilyanagar (Maharashtra): The ‘Dandakrama Ved Parayana’, ongoing in Kashi for the past 50 days, concluded recently. This is an ancient Vedic technique which involves flawless recitation of sacred Vedic mantras in a strict traditional sequence without referring to any text. Maharashtra’s Ahilyanagar-based 19-year-old Vedic scholar Shri. Devavrat Mahesh Rekhe has completed this highly arduous Dandakrama Parayana, thereby earning the title ‘Dandakrama Vikramaditya’. During this Parayana, Devavrat recited 2,000 mantras from pure memory, without referring to any scripture, continuously for 50 days, upholding the pride of the Vedic tradition on a global stage.

A grand ceremony was held under the guidance of the Jagadguru Shankaracharya of Sringeri Peeth, Shri Bharati Tirtha. The Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Shri. Devendra Fadnavis, congratulated Devavrat and conveyed his wishes that the radiance of Vedic heritage continues to shine ever brightly.

A Dandakrama Parayana in Kashi after 200 years

The Parayana was performed from 2 October to 30 November at the Vallabharam Shaligram Sangaveda Vidyalaya, between 8 a.m. and 12 noon daily, using mantras from the Madhyandini branch of Shukla Yajurveda. This is the first Dandakrama Parayana in Kashi after nearly 200 years. Earlier, around two centuries ago, Vedic scholar Shri. Narayan Shastri had performed a similar Parayana in Nashik.

On this occasion, Annapurna Mandir Mahant Shri. Shankarpuri Maharaj, Shri. Mahesh Chaitanya Brahmachari (Haridwar), Acharya Rajaram Shukla, and Acharya Hridayaranjan Sharma felicitated Devavrat. He was honoured with a gold bracelet and ₹1,01,116, along with tributes from several Vedic institutions. His father-guru Shri. Mahesh Chandrakant Rekhe, listener Shri. Devendra Gadhikar, and organiser Shri. Nilesh Kedar Joshi were also felicitated.

Prime Minister Modi extends greetings

“Only 19 years of age, yet generations will remember the achievement of Vedic scholar Shri. Devavrat Mahesh Rekhe! Every lover of Bharatiya culture takes immense pride in his faultless completion of the Dandakrama Parayana. Reciting 2,000 mantras of the Madhyandini branch of Shukla Yajurveda over 50 days without interruption is known as ‘Dandakrama Parayana’. The reciter must chant many Vedic mantras with perfect precision. This reflects the highest excellence of our guru parampara. It is a matter of great joy, as the MP of Kashi, that this extraordinary feat took place in the sacred city of Kashi. My salutations to his family, and to the saints, scholars and institutions supporting him across the nation.”

“We bow before this extraordinary achievement” – Acharya Tushar Bhosale

Acharya Tushar Bhosale, BJP Spiritual Coordination Front, stated that Dandakrama is the most complex, disciplined and rarest Vedic technique, and that this is only the second such performance recorded in history worldwide. The fact that it has been accomplished by a 19-year-old from Maharashtra is a matter of profound pride, he added.
