Donations for the purpose of spreading Hindu Dharma is verily a donation to the deserving. Take care that the sacred places around the river do not get polluted during ‘Parva-snan’

What is Kumbh mela ?

Kumbh Mela is the biggest Hinduism fair and a spiritual congregation held every 12 years in four Holy cities Prayag (Allahabad), Haridwar, Ujjain and Tryambakeshwar-Nashik in India. ‘Unity of Hindus’ is the main objective of the Kumbh Mela. The 4 places of ‘Kumbh Mela’ are symbols of 4 directions. These ‘Kumbh Melas’ used to be held even before modern means of transport were invented by man. During that time, it was not easy to come together from 4 directions of Bharat and therefore, these ‘Kumbh Melas’ become the common point of symbols of Hindu unity and culture.

During the Kumbh mela, millions of devotees from all around India and overseas congregate to perform religious rituals such as bathing in River Ganga, performing spiritual practice, donating, Pitrutarpan, ritual of shraddha, darshan of Saints, debates on Dharma etc. This is a congregation of those who have faith in Dharma. It is a unique occasion when not only devotees, but Deities, Sages, Saints and 330,000,000 tirthas too come to the Kumbh mela.

What is the history of Kumbh Mela ?

In order to define the actual kumbh Mela history, It is difficult to say when the Kumbh mela exactly started. It is believed that when the churning of the ocean of milk took place in Krutayug, the Kumbha Mela began. The Gods and demons came together to acquire the pot of Amrut (Divine nectar) and decided to churn the ocean of milk. The king of serpents, Vasuki, was requested to serve as a rope around the mountain Meru to churn the ocean. Accordingly Vasuki became the rope and was tied around the mountain Meru. The ocean was churned with the Gods holding the tail of the serpent and the demons, the mouth.

During the churning, fourteen unique items emerged from the ocean – Poison, Kāmadhēnu (A wish-fulﬁlling cow), Uchhaih-ashrava (A white horse), Airavat (An elephant with four tusks), Koustubha mani (A diamond), Parijat Kalpavruksha (A wish-fulﬁlling tree), Devanganas (Celestial maidens) such as Rambha etc., Shri Lakshmidevi (Consort of Shrivishṇu), Sura (Alcohol), Som (Moon), Haridhanu (A Divine bow), a conch, Dhanwantari and Amrutkalash or Amrutkumbh (Pot of Amrut).

When Deity Dhanwantari emerged from the ocean holding the Amrutkumbh, the Gods thought that if the demons became immortal upon drinking Amrut, they will create havoc in the world. They signalled Indra’s son, Jayant, who instantly took the Amrutkumbh from Deity Dhanwantari and ran in the direction of Heaven. To get hold of the Amrutkumbh, Gods and demons fought each other for 12 days and 12 nights, which are 12 years for the human. During the battle, the Amrutkumbh was kept down 12 times. Deity Sun protected it and the moon took care that the Amrut does not evaporate. The planet Jupiter (Guru) fought the demons and protected the pot. The 12 places where the drops of Amrut fell from the pot are considered to be the Kumbh Mela places as per the special position of the above mentioned planets. Of these 12 places 8 are in other lokas (Regions) and 4 on earth – Prayag (Allahabad), Hardwar (Haridwar), Ujjain and Tryambakeshwar-Nashik. At these places, the Kumbh Mela is held when the position of the planets and the tithi on which the Amrut drops fell on earth is the same. The Amrutkalash is also remembered during the Kumbh Mela.

When and where is Kumbh Mela held ?

The place where Kumbh Mela should be held and its timings have the foundation of planetary calculations. The Moon (Chandra), Sun (Surya) and Jupiter (Guru) provided unique assistance to Gods in the battle between Gods and demons for protecting the Amrutkumbh, the timeframe of the Kumbh Mela is decided when their speciﬁc alignment occurs in the zodiac. The Jupiter (Guru) played a significant role in fighting with the demons, hence its alignment is considered crucial for deciding the place and dates of Kumbh Mela.

Prayag Kumbh Mela

When Jupiter enters Aquarius(Kumbha sign) and Sun and Moon enter Capricorn on Magha Amavasya, the Kumbh Mela is held at Prayag (Allahabad). Every 12 years, a Prayag Kumbh Mela is held at the Triveni Sangam of Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati in Prayag. It is called ‘Mahakumbha Mela’. This Kumbha Parva comprises three Parvakals (Auspicious time) – Makar Sankranti, Maghi (Mouni) Amavasya and Vasant Panchami. The Maghi (Mouni) Amavasya is the principal Parva and is referred to as ‘Purnakumbha’. The Magha Pournima is also considered as a Parva (Auspicious) time. A Holy dip in the Ganga has special significance on the days of all the four Parvas. The Kumbha Mela comes every 12 years; every 6 years, the Kumbha Mela organised is called the ‘Ardha Kumbha Mela’.

Kumbh Mela Haridwar

When Jupiter enters the Aquarius and Sun enters Aries, the Kumbh Mela is held at Haridwar. During the Parvakal on 1. Mahashivratri, 2. Chaitra Amavasya, 3. Chaitra Pournima or Vaishakha Pratipada (the day on which the Sun is in the Aries and Jupiter is in the Kumbha sign) Rajyogi snan (Shahisnan) is taken.

Simhastha Kumbha Parva of Ujjain

When Jupiter is in Leo and Sun is in Aries, Simhastha Kumbha Parva is held in Ujjain. On the day of Vaishakha Pournima since it is Parvakal Rajyogi snan (Shahisnan) (Holy bath) is taken. Holy bath is also taken on Chaitra Pournima, Chaitra Amavasya, Akshayya Trutiya, and Ekadashi. The bath in River Kshipra in Ujjain in the month of Vaishakha is considered to be more Holy.

Nashik Kumbh Mela

When Jupiter as well as Sun are in the Leo sign, Nashik Kumbh Mela takes place at Nashik-Tryambakeshwar. During this period, Rajyogi snan (Shahisnan) is taken during the Parvakal on 1. Shravan Krushna Panchami, 2. Shravan Krushna Amavasya, 3. Bhadrapad Shukla Panchami (Only at Nashik) and Vaman Jayanti (Only at Tryambakeshwar). Apart from this, a special Parvakal exists during the auspicious occasions of Vaidhruti and Vyatipat.

What are the other names of Kumbh Mela ?

1. Mahakumbh mela
Every 12 years, a Kumbha Mela is held at the Triveni Sangam of rivers Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati in Prayag. It is called ‘Mahakumbh Mela’.

2. Ardha Kumbh mela
Kumbh mela held every six years is called as Ardha Kumbh mela. However, the Kumbh mela held every 12 years gives the true benefits of a Kumbh mela.

3. Simhastha Kumbh mela
This is a name is given to Kumbh mela held at Ujjain and Tryambakeshwar-Nashik. When Jupiter alone, or along with Sun are in Leo sign of the zodiac, the Kumbh mela is also referred to as Simhastha.
