Bhimashankar

One of the 12 jyotirlingas, Bhimashankar is located in the Western Ghats about 120 km from Pune. It is also the source of river Bhima. According to one of the legends around this pilgrim place, Shiva killed the demon Tripurasur here and the sweat that poured from his body after the battle is said to have formed Bhima river.

The temple is comparatively recent in its construction .The summit was built by Nana Phadnavis in around 18th century. Shivaji Maharaj is said to have visited this temple. During Mahashivaratri there is a great fair at the temple. Behind the temple there is a tank called Mokshakund.

The temple is surrounded by dense forest. A rare squirrel like animal 'Shekru' is found here.

State Transport Corporation buses are available from all nearby places.
