Lal Bahadur Shastri – A true idealist

The great freedom fighter, Lal Bahadur Shastri was serving his sentence in prison. The prison was under strict security vigilance. No one was permitted to meet the inmates of the prison. After immense persuasion, the prison authority permitted Lal Bahadur Shastri's wife, Lalitagauri to meet him. His wife went in to meet him. The prison guards allowed her to go in without scrutinising her.

After talking with Shastriji for a while, she gave him two mangoes which she had brought with her secretly and said to him, "I know you like mangoes very much, that is why, I have secretly brought them for you. Shastriji was very upset on seeing this. He said to her, "You should not have done this. The security guards trusted you and allowed you to come inside without scrutinising you; but you have broken their trust. Before thinking what I like, you should have thought what I do not like. I do not like breaking prison rules. I do not want these mangoes, take them back."

Children, this shows what a true idealist Lal Bahadur Shastri was.
