Kannur : In a suspected retaliatory attack, a 26-year-old RSS Cadre attached to BJP activities was hacked to death at Thillankeri in  Kannur district Saturday night, hardly two hours after a CPM man was injured in a bomb attack in the same area.

The deceased has been identified as Bineesh, a native of Thillankeri near Iritty, and son of P.P. Vasu and P.M. Padmini.

BJP has called for a dawn-to-dusk (6 am to 6 pm) hartal in Kannur district on Sunday, to protest the murder of its worker. Distribution of milk, newspaper and emergency services have been exempted from the hartal. CPM has also announced a hartal in Thillankeri panchayat.

Bineesh was found with severe injuries on his head and leg around 9.30 pm near the Thillankeri panchayat office and was rushed to the Iritty taluk hospital by police. However, his life could not be saved.

Bineesh was attacked with sharp-edged weapons by a gang near the panchayat office, police said. The gang created panic in the area by hurling country-made before targeting Bineesh, police added.

The attack on Bineesh took place about an hour about an hour after Jijesh, a DYFI/CPM worker, was injured when country-made bombs were thrown at a car he was traveling in around 7.30 pm. Jijesh, with injuries on his neck and stomach, was admitted into the intensive care unit of the AKG (A.K. Gopalan) hospital in Kannur.

On August 25, four RSS workers were attacked allegedly by CPM workers at Muzukkunnu in the district, triggering tension in the locality. Jijesh was reportedly an accused of hacking and injuring RSS functionary Sajesh at Muzhakkunnu then. Meanwhile, Bineesh’s body was shifted to Pariyaram Medical College Hospital.

BJP’s Kerala unit immediately blamed CPM for the murder of Bineesh in a tweet.

Thillankeri and surrounding areas are highly tense after the murder, as reported.

Houses of CPM and BJP activists came under bomb attack in the evening, the report added. Police personnel are deployed in large numbers in the area.

Kannur has of late witnessed increasing political clashes between activists of the state’s ruling CPM and BJP/RSS activists.

According to the police, uneasy calm has been prevailing in and around Thillankeri for the past one week and Saturday it got worse with the BJP and CPM activists taking on one another.
