Goa : BJP on Sunday announced Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi as head of the Lok Sabha campaign committee amid controversy over veteran leader L K Advani's "boycott" of the party meet.

According to Times Now, Rajnath Singh declared Modi as chief of the campaign panel during his valedictory address to the executive meet.

The move heralds the emergence of a "gennext" leader post the Advani-Vajpayee era, the moment rendered all the more dramatic as it comes in spite of Advani's entrenched resistance.

The decision to override Advani's views marks a sharp decline in the leader's influence and sets the stage for Modi's projection as a PM candidate well before the 2014 polls.

Reflecting the mood in the party ranks, Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikar had said Modi should be the "face of the party" at least six months before the general elections. Even Uma Bharati, seen to be close to Advani, wrote to party chief Rajnath Singh saying she will support any decision the party takes.
