Guwahati: The Assam Police on Monday arrested a headmistress of a government school in Goalpara district for allegedly carrying beef for lunch. Daliman Nessa, 56, was accused of bringing beef to the institution – M.E School – on the day of Gunotsav. The incident happened on Saturday. The school management committee reportedly filed a complaint following which she was arrested.

Gunotsav is a quality enhancement initiative of the state government for bringing about improvement in the learning levels of students at the elementary level. During this, top officials from the district visit the schools to assess their performance.

Nessa was booked under sections 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence) and 295A (Deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), according to The Indian Express.

A police official said the school management committee reported that she had brought beef to school for lunch, and was serving it to some other members of the staff, which created a sense of discomfort among them. The incident, he said, had upset both religious communities in the school.

On Sunday, she was brought in for questioning and later she was arrested.
