The entire world is in the grip of the Covid-19 (coronavirus) pandemic. Even India has seen rapidly rising numbers in those afflicted by the virus. The entire country is under a 21 day lockdown to arrest the spread of the virus. Despite all the measures being undertaken by the government and the people, we are being assailed by unsettling news from across the country.
The Joint Secretary of the Health Ministry briefed the press that the members of the Tablighi Jamaat congregation who travelled across the country are the reason behind the increasing Covid-19 cases. It has also been reported that while members of the Jamaat were being transported to quarantine centres, they were seen spitting from the buses. This too may have resulted in spreading the virus. This is not an isolated incident, across the country there are reports of masses congregating to offer namaz (inspite of the lockdown), of attacks by religious fanatics on police and government employees who try to prevent such meetings (to halt the spread of the coronavirus), of Muslim preachers of foreign origin being illegally sheltered in mosques etc., to list a few.
These incidents prompted netizens on Twitter to wonder if this were a new form of Jihad ? Whether this is a conspiracy to undermine the health and safety measures of the Government and ensure the pandemic wrecks havoc in India ? Netizens expressed their opinions and questions with hashtag #Corona_Jihad in the morning of 3 April. Soon this became one of the top 10 national trends in India and was on 2nd spot for some time.
Here are some of the tweets from the trend :
Instead of treating these Tablighi Jamaat members in hospitals, shouldn't they be sent in jails ? —
👉 For spitting on road & in buses
👉 For spitting on doctors & other staff treating them
👉 For roaming naked in hospital & making lewd gestures for nurses
