Malappuram : Manjeri police have arrested a 47-year-old man for allegedly posting pro-Islamic State posts on his Facebook account.
The arrested person has been identified as Askar (47), a native of Kalathingalpadi near Anakkayam. According to the police, the person was taken into custody on Monday morning after receiving intelligence inputs on his suspicious social media posts.
According to a police source, the investigation officials have completed preliminary interrogation of the accused and they are yet to receive any clue on his direct link with any terrorist organisation.
“Askar was under close watch of the cyber wing of the police. He was active on Facebook since 2016 and most of his posts were communal in nature. He regularly supported Islamic State ideologies and the activities of terrorist organisations such as Jaish-e-Muhammed and al Qaida. The details of his involvement in any such activities could be revealed only through a detailed interrogation,” said a police official.
Police have learnt that Askar, who returned from the Gulf years ago, completed his religious studies in Madurai and Dindigul in Tamil Nadu.
“We have received information that Askar, who was active in various discussions on religious matters on social media platforms, was not active among the locals. He told the police that he was running a real-estate business. But we have to verify the facts after detailed questioning,” said a police source.
